Where Were You in 1972?

Forty years ago in 1972, the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts was founded by Allegra Mott to promote the craft of miniature making through the association and friendship of its artisans, craftsmen and collectors. Forty years later, we will celebrate the anniversary of NAME at the 2012 Charlotte National Convention.

Of course, a lot of other things were going on in 1972 besides NAME’s creation.  For example, there were a lot of bell bottoms, leisure suits and those two good friends’ poly and ester were found in everything we wore. Remember harvest gold and avocado green appliances? Of course there was gold and green nylon carpet to match with shag in all colors that needed raked. Everything was “cool” or “far out” then and that had nothing to do with temperature or distance! The Godfather was the number one film in the US, All in the Family was the number one US TV show and Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven was playing everywhere.

So the big question is WHERE WERE YOU IN 1972?

Please comment below and share your history in NAME and how this crazy little hobby of ours has become an obsession (wait, is that just me?) for you and tell us all about your first experience with Nationals, Regionals and State Days.  In return, I’ll be sharing my story and the story of various committee members.  Once the convention starts I’ll be asking attendees their stories as well. Over the last 40 years we have a lot of shared history together!

Speaking of committee members, the last meeting before the convention was held and sounds like I missed a good one (darn work for getting in the way of a good time!) and here are a few pictures to prove it!
Here's Rachel either laughing or giving over to delirium.  It could go either way!

Roy Moore, King of Operations, is moving so fast he's a blur!

So now, it looks like they are getting serious and back to working hard.

So, the seriousness didn't last.  But we ARE serious about you having a fabulous time at the convention!

See you soon in Charlotte!

~Michelle

  1. I joined NAME in 1980 and my first contact was attending public day of the 1980 national in Washington, D.C.
In 1972, I was busy here in Harrisburg working on clean-up from Hurricane Agnes which sent the Susquehanna River to a major flood. My work place, the Patriot-News was flooded with about 6 feet street level and first floor and the presses and newsprint in the sub-basement submerged. We were without restroom facilities and A/C that summer. Thank goodness for Port-a-potties. Our editions were printed in Chambersburg and Allentown for months. We also had 3 feet of water in our basement at home from run-off. A memorable summer.
